What happens during IVF?
The four primary steps that happen during IVF are-
In this process the ovaries are monitored by the doctor along with the timing of the egg release. The doctor makes sure that the ovaries release eggs and the hormone levels are maintained. Having more than one egg released increases the chances of getting pregnant, so females induce the process of ovulation by taking certain medicines and hormones. In case of no egg production, donors may be used.
This process takes place right after induction. Once the eggs are induced, a thin needle is passed through the vaginal wall and the fluid is collected through suction. The oocyte is then collected from the follicular fluid and transferred to the incubator. The process happens under light sedation.
Next step after egg retrieval is fertilization. This happens when the collected egg is fertilized with the sperm, either gathered from the partner or a donor. Sometimes the sperm is directly fused into the egg. In case of abnormal sperm parameters ICSI is performed to fertilize the mature eggs. The resulting embryo is then placed in the incubator for a healthy growth.
The final step is the transfer of the embryo. In this the healthiest embryo is selected and transferred through the cervix into your uterine cavity using a small plastic tube.
Infertility causes that can be treated with the help of IVF:
Infertility is something that cannot be blamed on any one of the sexes. It can be because of any one of them. Some major factors that contribute to being infertile are-
- Problems in Ovulation
- Issues with uterus or fallopian tubes
- Low sperm motility- no or low penetration
- Low sperm counts
- Age related infertility
- Uterine fibroids
Risks involved with IVF process:
IVF is a step by step process and this carries certain types of risks:
This is not limited to having a baby only through IVF. The risk of a miscarriage is equal in the normal pregnancy too. However, the major impact comes with age. Frozen embryos are also responsible for an increased risk of miscarriage in IVF process.
The risk of multiple births is very common in IVF. This happens due to multiple implants of embryo in the uterus. Multiple fetus increases the risk of early labor and a low birth weight as compared to a single fetus.
Ovarian Hyperstimulation process
The first step of IVF process is ovarian stimulation for which there are inject able drugs used like HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin). The use of this particular drug causes ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome wherein the ovaries become swollen and painful. Other signs include bloating, restlessness, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea.
Complications after Egg-retrieval
The aspirating needle used during retrieval causes bleeding, infection and damage to vessels, bowel or bladder. However, this might not happen always, if the process is handled with great expertise just like at Indo Nippon IVF there is no possible risk involved.
This type of pregnancy happens when the egg is implanted outside the uterus usually inside the fallopian tube. Since there is no way for the embryo to survive outside its home (the uterus )
the pregnancy is unsuccessful.
It is very important to choose the IVF clinic wisely, which has handled cases for IVF and othyer fertility treatments. The right choice eliminates a lot of risks that occur due to physical mistakes as there is absolutely no control over the natural risks.
